I rebuild production guitars for working musicians so their tool speaks like a custom guitar.

My handmade guitars are limited and custom made in the way I perform my repair work.

Models are inspired by the finest I’ve maintained over 35 years of continual repair.

I look forward to working with like minded passionate musicians and connoisseurs.

Brief History

Growing up, my love for guitar was sparked by my musical cousins & artists like Hendrix & Segovia.

I started lessons at 10 and experimented with improving my inexpensive guitars.

At 16, I gained repair experience at a high school program, then studied music and classical guitar, whilst working with many skilled luthiers.

I founded my workshop in 1994 & have traveled nationally & abroad to learn from masters since that time.

My studies in acoustics and materials science deepen my craft. Inspired by many artisans.

I strive to create emotionally resonant, beautifully crafted instruments driven by passion and purpose.

Philosophy

My passion is to help guitarist achieve their expressive voice.

As each musician’s touch is different I set out to understand the obstacles impeding their phrasing.

The mechanical shortcomings, damping & wear of materials affect function & response.

Have I missed anything ?

Can I discover other ways to measure and understand ?

Musical instruments are oscillators.

I spend my life fine tuning these sensitive systems.

    Jim's making great guitars. They look good, sound good, and are really player friendly. An overall attention to detail. I found the "Brazilian Rosewood guitar" to have a lovely balanced sound and very nice projection.

    It responded well to the unique demands of fingerpicking and I was able to draw from it a wide expressive range and a variety of tones.

    They're the things I look for most in a guitar and the Matheas had it !
